NOTES FROM THE DISCUSSION

Japanese Otaku:

·       Originally derived from a second-person pronoun that depicts a level of honor

·       Also refers to another house or family.

·       Depicted in anime and manga

·       Most people in Japan consider the term Otaku to be undesirable and offensive. At its core, it means the same thing in Japan as it does in America. The main difference is the culture of both societies.

·       Being an Otaku and its correlation to having mental illness.

·       Hikomori, NEETs, Paranoid or disorganized schizophrenia,

English Otaku:

·       Interchangeable with the term Geek, Nerd or Fan Boy

·       Is it more acceptable to be an Otaku in America or is anime and manga so niche that it doesn’t register as a social taboo?

·       We’ve embraced being nerds and turned it into something to be admired.
