The Speakeasy - Heart of Fire

Attention: open in a new window. PDFPrintE-mail
Drink #002: Heart of Fire, Go Nagai VS. Gurren Lagann. This is THE match-up of manly madness made for men who marvel at mechanical monsters. The battle for the hearts and minds for those who love robot designs. A grudge match started in the land of the rising sun but ends in the home of the stars and stripes. In the red corner we have the dreamer from Wajima and the father of the Super robot, Go Nagai and Mazinger Z. In the white corner we have and the kings of boob bounce that are ready to pounce, Gainax and Gurren Lagann.

Actually this is an examination of why Gurren Lagann is so popular with anime fans in the U.S. and Shin Mazinger only really has a fandom among Go Nagai fans despite seeming like shows that have almost identical appeal. What are the key factors that earn one show such a broad audience but keep people out of the other even though both show are awesome.

And now your helpful bartenders at The Speakeasy present your drink:

Heart of Fire
* 1 to 2 measures Whiskey
* Tabasco sauce to taste

Serve whiskey of choice in a shot glass, add a few drops of Tabasco sauce, and down in one swallow. Speedy intoxication may be the intended result for this fiery cocktail, but go easy with it, as not only the whiskey but also the capsaicin in the peppers in the Tabasco sauce can have adverse side effects if taken to excess.

[1:27] News: Wonder Festival 2010

Comic Market is a doujinshi wonderland.

Garage Kits you will never get that will make you cry yourself to sleep.

I love the Portrait of Pirates figures and this year looks to have some great figures coming out.

Sir Crocodile, Red-Haired Shanks, Buggy the Clown, Boa Hancock, Luffy, Jinbei, WhitebeardBartholomew Kuma, Zoro, Chopper are all the random One Piece charaters I mention like a machine gun.

For the two people who don't know where the phrase huge tracks of land comes from.

I am very much looking forward to the 10th One Piece movie, Strong World.

The 100th Nendoroid is the Mickey Mouse Nendoroid.

I know that both of these figures from Revoltech of Vash and Wolfwood will make Narutaki very happy.

Revoltech Professor Layton knows that every puzzle has an answer.

This is the Figma Canaan I was talking about.

Here is the mini AV-98 Ingram from Patlabor or more specifically Mobile Police Patlabor Minimum.

We get a Archer Figma and a Rider Figma but will there ever be love for Caster.

The was bunch of Macross toys which is always a good thing.

Godannar figures are always a surprise.

Macross Swimsuit versions of Minmay and Mylene.

I am looking forward to the Macross Frontier movies.

The iconic SDF-1 Macross

Here is one of the million K-ON figures coming out. You can go and find the rest.

I always find dollfie super creepy but that is just me.

The 1:1 figure museum. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

[14:02] Listen Feed Back form Jamie

Lauren Gram from the Gilmore Girls vs Pamela Anderson

Indy Comics are so diverse I cannot say there is one simple examples I can give.

Super Girl and X-Men have super clear examples of the stereotypical female body shape.

I have always had a crush on Shadow Cat. Just in case anyone was curious. Which I am sure they were not.

Young Avengers and Runaways are good examples of a variety on bod types especially with Gertrude and Nico.

Runaways was from the Marvel's Tsunami line.

[19:00] The Cocktail: Go Nagai vs. Gurren Lagann

The song was by friend Eric Ma of the Super Amazing Number One blog

[21:42] Round 1 of Go Nagai vs. Gurren Lagann

WARNING: WE HAVE SPOILERS FOR BOTH GURREN LAGANN AND SHIN MAZINGER SO WATCH OUT!

You should really read Go Nagai's Wikipeida entry just to learn about how he got into manga. It's sort of amazing.

Shin Mazinger Shogeki! Z Hen is a Yasuhiro Imagawa directed update of a Go Nagai classic. This is Mana from heaven to fans of either man. Together it is best summed up by this picture.

Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann hardly needs any introduction. It's like linking to Death Note or Dragon Ball Z. I mostly do it out of my detail oriented nature.

Master Asia is a man among men.

Gundam Sousei is the TRUE HISTORY of the making of Mobile Suit Gundam.

Who would win? We have all seen this sort of thing. Heck most of us have probably participated in a dozen conversions like it as well. BTW the answer is always Saber.

[23:07] We pose the question: Why is Gurren Lagaan so popular but Shin Mazinger is not despite being so similar at times?

6 of 40  people mentioned Gurren Lagann in the Otaku Diaries.

Dear Fujoshi,
Why must you keep putting Simon and Kamina together in your yaoi fan-art? There are plenty of good pairings from Gurren Lagann that to not cater to pedophiles. Please use those instead.
Your pal, Al

Apparently Kouji Kabuto is a boy just like you or me. I was unaware you and I were so awesomely manly. Good job us.

Mazinger Z 100 Rocket Punches for all those poor people who did not get to see it.

Sayaka Yumi I hear certain people, who shall go nameless, think she is super hot.

[29:48] The differences in the characters

Hot Blood Robot Pilots are now a staple of the genre as opposed to your icy cold ace like Kyosuke Nanbu or your angsty teen pilot like Amruo Ray.

Eventually Kittan Bachika worked his way into Narutkai's heart. Just so they could kill him like Kamina.

Seigi is the term for justice I was talking about from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Clarissa mentions it in her review of Jojo's part 1.

[37:00] The differences in the ladies

Yoko Littner shall forever get new figures much like Asuka and Rei before her. I have no objection to this.

Nia Teppelin, I actually really liked her.

Yamato Nadeshiko is sort of this Japanese ideal woman to many Japanese men. The whole phenomenon is an intriguing look into Japanese society.

Sometimes some things just have to go crashing to the ground.

Tsubasa Nishikiori is one tough mother. It is immediately obvious which parent Kouji takes after.

Juzo Kabuto has a rather silly theme song so it's easy to forget what a bad arse he can be.

Violence Jack is where Tsubasa Nishikiori originates from. I am sure she is horrifically humiliated and killed in Violence Jack though because that is the type of manga that is.

Yasuhiro Imagawa is one of those directors that has a signature style that wins him very hardcore fans.

[43:53] Difference in character development

Dave's Man's Path Theory

Yeah I am linking to Saiyan just in case.

Yamitaro Ankokuji = The Detective Guy. He is pretty much a comic relief character but even so he get his time to prove his manly awesomeness in Shin Mazinger.

Baron Ashura is a surprisingly complex character in Shin Mazinger.

Viral. I think Kate saw more of him in fan-art than she saw in the show. And she is not the biggest Viral fan by any stretch of the imagination.

[48:17] Age of the character designs

Mazinger Z started in October 2, 1972 distinctly making it a 70's manga with very 70's manga character designs.

Bishonen, Bishoujo, and Seinen just in case anyone was unaware that they mean. Please read the definition of Bishonen because I feel people throw the term around a bit too much.

Our mecha guide for Tim Maughan Books which contains the comment I talked about.

[52:38] Going backwards slowly to go forwards

Mobile Suit Gundam Wing and Mobile Suit Gundam can appeal to a similar audience without a doubt but do not have 100% the same audience in any way shape or form.

Bandai streams Gundam. Now you can watch Original Gundam and Zeta. I suggest you do so while you can.

I myself have never seen Dirty Pair Flash but its bad reputation proceeds it.

Tetsujin 28-go FX looks just so very, very ridiculous. I am curious if it is so bad it's good. It looks like it just might be but it could also just be plain bad.

WARNING: Some of these videos are NSFW: Cutey Honey has had quite a few iterations: Original, New, Flash, Re:Cutie Honey, and even a live action TV series. You can see they always keep the basic concept but Cutey Honey's character design is a massive insight into the aesthetics of the time.

Dave and Joel talk about Cutey Honey with utter embarrassment.

Slayers Revolution is something I really have to buy when I have money again.

[59:55] Our final thoughts

I know that Panda Z is something Kate loves but even the cuteness of Panda Z cannot win over mega Go Nagai-hater Kohaku.

[61:42] Ending

The story line where people could vote if Robin lives or dies.

Check out Kate's Final Denouncement about the use of screen tone in manga and OEL.

Otaku Diaries 8: Friends don’t let friends watch Akikan! is all about the social networks of our participants.

The first part of our review of Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

The last part in our Visual Novel post looks at fantasy games and their logo design.

Ending song: Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century
