Overhead shooters aren’t exactly known for their length and for the most part, this holds true. There are eight stages to explore and once you’re done, that’s it. There are, however, a few modes that extend the replayability: Adventure, Arcade, Challenge and Multiplayer. The first three modes go through the same 8 stages but have a twist. Adventure mode goes through the 8 stages and allows you to save after each one, while Arcade mode has you shooting for the high score. Challenges have specific tasks, such as completing a mission without getting hit or achieve a certain amount of points and Multiplayer serves as the co-op mode of the game.
Visually, the game looks fantastic. Running at smooth 60 frames per second, there is no slow down to be had. The only instance in which the game slows down is during multiplayer when it starts running at 30 frames.
While the game is polished, it does have a few flaws. For starters, it feels awkward when switching weapons. Having to either extend your thumbs or look down for a split second can throw you off during the game. The sound is lackluster, with a generic techno soundtrack and dull sound effects—notably, the firing sound which is heard throughout the game. There is radar on the touch screen during the boss fights that is completely useless. Lastly, the game is too short.
Despite these shortcomings, Nanostray is still a blast to play. The game is very reminiscent of the classic old school shooter, and can captivate anyone looking for nostalgia or just a fun time.
