A blast from the past. Nanostray is a 3D, top down shooter that takes inspiration from old school shooters that everybody has played at least twice in their lifetime. Like other old school shooters, story doesn’t mean anything. Details about the story are limited, but the game’s website provides a summary: slowly awakening from a blast to the side of your space ship and your memory is wiped. Instinctively, you check your console; a destination is still plugged in. You must take action; the enemy is starting to swarm.Aside from basic twitch-finger gameplay, some touch screen functionality is added in the game. Your ship has the option of using four unique weapons and each one can be selected via the touch screen. In addition to this, there are sub weapons to each one of these guns and smart bombs at your disposal as. You are allowed to have 3 smart bombs at once.

Overhead shooters aren’t exactly known for their length and for the most part, this holds true. There are eight stages to explore and once you’re done, that’s it. There are, however, a few modes that extend the replayability: Adventure, Arcade, Challenge and Multiplayer. The first three modes go through the same 8 stages but have a twist. Adventure mode goes through the 8 stages and allows you to save after each one, while Arcade mode has you shooting for the high score. Challenges have specific tasks, such as completing a mission without getting hit or achieve a certain amount of points and Multiplayer serves as the co-op mode of the game.

Visually, the game looks fantastic. Running at smooth 60 frames per second, there is no slow down to be had. The only instance in which the game slows down is during multiplayer when it starts running at 30 frames.

While the game is polished, it does have a few flaws. For starters, it feels awkward when switching weapons. Having to either extend your thumbs or look down for a split second can throw you off during the game. The sound is lackluster, with a generic techno soundtrack and dull sound effects—notably, the firing sound which is heard throughout the game. There is radar on the touch screen during the boss fights that is completely useless. Lastly, the game is too short.

Despite these shortcomings, Nanostray is still a blast to play. The game is very reminiscent of the classic old school shooter, and can captivate anyone looking for nostalgia or just a fun time.
