The first half of the episode focuses on a group of student as they‘re getting ready to graduate. They’re in school to learn how to fight, so it’s only proper that the final test is a battle. The twist is that they have to have a death match against a giant eye patch wearing convict.
The second half is a about our main character, Teito Klein, finding out who killed his father. It turns out that he’s someone who works at the school (or he was at least visiting that day). Teito fails at his attempt for revenge and is thrown in prison. His best friend breaks him out almost immediately and Teito gets away on what can only be described as a flying jet ski. Now several hundred yards from his captors, everything seems like it’s going to work out, except it doesn’t. Teito is shot down and begins plummeting to his death as the episode ends. Sounds pretty cool, huh?
The problem is that it’s so poorly done that it actually ends up being excruciatingly boring. When the students are screaming for their lives during the fight with the convict, you almost want to kill them yourself for being so dull. The idea is that you won't notice this because you’re paying too much attention to the yaoi-bait relationship between Teito and his friend.
It’s really a shame because this first episode is action-packed. There’s multiple fights, multiple explosion, and an assassination attempt! Very few shows accomplish as much as this does in one episode, but that’s the problem with most yaoi-esque shows--pacing. The events of this one episode could’ve spanned at least four more, but for some reason they crammed it all into 20 minutes.
The biggest disappointment is the lame special powers. It’s hard to imagine that someone could make an idea like psychic energy belts suck, but somehow this show manages to do just that. The other powers hinted at in the opening credits might end up being better executed, but it’s unlikely.
The next episode doesn’t bring much more to the table. There’s a bunch of nuns, more yaoi-bait, and plenty of pretentious mystery. You could say that they’re trying to build tension, but it’s more likely that they didn’t know what to do next with the story. The best part about the second episode is that even though Teito has been rescued he remains chained up the whole time. Somehow he manages to change his entire wardrobe despite this handicap.
This show makes you wonder if the creators sat down and said, “Hey, do you remember CLAMP? Yeah! Let’s make a something just like a CLAMP manga, but we’ll take all the good stuff out.” If you want to watch a decent anime about cute boys beating each other up, then your time would be better spent watching the X TV series. Whatever you do, don’t waste your time on 07-Ghost.

07-Ghost is being made by Studio Deen. It’s based on manga by Yuki Amemiya and Yukino Ichihara. The opening of this anime is great. It’s haunting melody is filled with piano riffs coupled with sweet guitar squeals. It really gets you in the mood for anime characters kicking each other in the face. The visuals don’t fail to disappoint. It’s full of energy attacks tearing up the earth, giant scythes, psychic monofilament wire, and people with wings made of bones.
