Impression:
Unfortunately, this isn’t an adaptation of Quake like I had hoped. Instead, this is a side story to last year’s A Certain Magical Index. Fortunately, it doesn’t seem to matter too much as Railgun’s first episode does a good job of explaining all of the important bits for those tuning in the first time.
From the first episode, Railgun provides the audience with a solid, if not exactly original, mix of slow slice-of-life comedy and nicely animated fight scenes peppered with copious lesbian subtext. It’s not exactly going to light the world on fire, but as far as shows of it’s ilk goes, it’s adequately entertaining and there are some cute gags, like Mikoto wearing long shorts under her skirt to avoid panty-flashes. By the end of this first episode, we’re not quite sure where this is all going, but at least we’re not pulling our hair out.
Summary “Judgment”:
If you want ambiguously lesbian schoolgirls blowing things up or a fan of the original series, this gun might just be worth a shot.
