As for the show itself however, it’s very much a cut-and-dry affair. Kobato’s foray into humanity is full of all the standard trope and over-exaggerations that we expect. Watch as she fails at cooking! Oh look, her plush puppy partner is getting angry - watch as he spits out fireballs! There is very little that comes off as genuinely surprising and anyone who’s seen fish-out-of-water anime will know what’s coming in this first episode.
Still, for however dangerously close it verges to being generic moe slogfest #348493, it never quite gets to that territory. It isn’t exploitative to its heroine and the characters introduced thus far are natural, if archetypical.
Summary
Overall, the atmosphere is very pleasant and, while not everyone’s cup of tea, it’s be easy to this becoming the toast of the internet. While the story of Kobato’s wish hasn’t quite kicked in by the end of the episode, it’s certainly one of the best shows so far this season. Which isn’t saying much sad to say.
First Impression: Kobato

By: Fernando RamosSeries Premiere: October 6th, 2009Director: Mitsuyuki MasuharaProduction by: Madhouse StoryKobato Hanato has just arrived in the human world amidst a flutter of cherry blossoms. Knowing nothing of the human world, Kobato, with the guidance of her foul-tempered plush companion Ioryogi, must first learn to fit in with human society. Only then can she receive a magical bottle that will allow her to collect the “wounded hearts” of people and have her wish be granted.ImpressionsAiring on NHK, Japan’s answer to the BBC, it’s a given that Kobato’s production value is about as good as a TV show can hope for. Every blossom pedal, strand of hair and skirt flutters beautifully across the screen with CLAMP’s distinctive character designs providing icing on the cake. Likewise, the music is top-caliber, with a gentle pop opening by Maaya Sakamoto and pleasant orchestral music capped with a show-stopping insert song in the opening episode’s final act. It’s apparent that few expenses were spared in production.
