The characters are quite realistically scripted and this writer felt no inclination to punch them for all their overreactions and longing stares. Rather, whatever foolishness is exhibited has more to do with the runaway emotions of adolescents than writer-induced stupidity. This is especially true in the case of Sumika Murasame, who is fun to watch as she berates her friend for her constant skirt-chasing all while masking a deep longing. For anyone who remembers having their heart broken in high school, it all rings too true.
Final Confessions
Whispered Words is one of the genuine surprise hits of the season for this writer. It’s got heart, intelligence and some genuinely sweet moments. If the constant ploys of ‘subtext’ and gals hemming and hawing without actually going anywhere has gotten you up the wall, Sasameki Koto will be like mana from the heavens.
First Impression: Sasameki Koto
Written by Fernando Ramos
By: Fernando RamosSeries Premiere: October 7, 2009Director: Eiji SuganumaAnimation Production: AICStory“Why can’t girls love each other?” innocently asks Ushio Kazama over some lunch. Unbeknownst to her however, her dear friend Sumika Murasame is deeply in love with her. The problem? Kazama only likes “Cute” girls and Murasame, with her athletic frame and lady-like air, just doesn’t qualify. Murasame, in her quiet despair, can only look on as Kazama keeps getting her heart broken by girl after hopeless girl. Can Murasama make Kazama come around to seeing what’s right in front of her?ImpressionsAsk yourself one question: “Do I like lesbian melodrama?” If the answer is yes, then Sasameki Koto (Whispered Words to you Anglophones) will be a godsend. Lacking any of the pussy-footing (no pun intended) of other yuri-fodder fare, Sasameki is boisterously here, queer and we better get used to it. Where most series play this sort of material for laughs or titillation, this insists on remaining a classy and low-key affair about its predominantly Sapphic cast.
