Daichi Kakeru makes it a point to tell us he’s a virgin at several points in the story. His first kiss is actually with the girl slash soda can. He spends the majority of the episode in his birthday suit, trying to disseminate the reality of this supernatural situation. It turns out that Daichi is an avid soda can collector. Clearly, these two were destined to find each other.
It appears that the melon soda girl is part of a government project called Akikan. They have powers that allow them to produce blasts of carbon dioxide. This ability is used numerous times on Daichi after he makes unwanted advances on the soda girl. The soda is their life force, which means once it runs out they die. They simply need to drink more soda to replenish their powers.
The character interaction in this first episode is often funny. One of the most memorable scenes includes a government official named Otoya, who is clearly a homosexual, but that’s not the funny part. The humor ensues when he makes sexual advances towards Daichi after he breaks into his house to confront him about the Akikan.
We’re introduced to several other characters once Daichi goes to school. A lot of cliché characters make an appearance. You have a lesbian witch, an obsessively timid girl who is secretly in love with the male protagonist and the new kid who is invisible and goes unnoticed. What I like about Daichi’s character is his ability to alienate everyone that surrounds him. Not only is he a virgin, he’s a self-centered jerk who doesn’t know how to be civil to his peers. The episode focuses on the developing relationship between Daichi and his soda girl and they’re future cohabitation.
