This is seemingly a slice of life story with the anticipation of minor comedic elements. The characters aren’t engaging and the dialogue doesn’t seem to establish any significant plot points. In actuality, the first half of episode one stalls for time until an explosion smacks the viewer in the face with a handful of insipid happenings. It’s at this point where you are left scratching your head trying to figure out what type of show you’re really watching.
Take for example a teleported abandoned space colony that’s controlled by an artificial intelligence known as Leopard. After his initial confrontation with Akiha and Imo-chan, Leopard proceeds to use a powerful weapon on the space police. It ends up being a dud, so he tries to commit suicide.
The show’s drastic shift leaves me with one of two conclusions. Either the writers of this series have a clear vision and it’s going to take three or five episodes to bare fruit, or this is a show with little direction that’s not worth watching. With Sunrise’s involvement in this project, I’m willing to believe the former.
Sitting through the first episode felt like a triathlon of patience. The second episode started to shed some light on some of the characters and formed some semblance of a story. Sora Kake is worth checking out because of its potential to be an above average series. Although, I won’t jump up and down when the next episode is released.
