Takashi Natsume is a teenager who can see youkai (spirits). He inherited a book of friends, which contains the names of vanquished spirits. The book originally belonged to his grandmother who possessed a similar ability to see spirits. As a result of his grandmother's reputation, Takashi is constantly pursued by youkai that want both the book and his life. This series manages to keep a clean balance between a supernatural series and a light comedy. There are several humorous moments and charming characters. The animation is soft, defined and similar to character design of Tadashi Hiramatsu (Fruits Basket) and with art direction similar to the work of Takeshi Waki (Mushi-Shi).
In this episode, Takashi has a falling out with his mentor, Nyanko-sensei, after punching him in the face for not saving his life. Important note, Nyanko is concealed in the form of a pudgy cat. Takashi starts to worry about his mentor until a cat that look similar to Nyanko appears at his bedroom window. Thinking it's just his mentor with a thick coat of soot, he showers him and shelters him in his room. When his mentor arrives, it's revealed that the cat is only there to take the book of friends.
They eventually chase the cat into the forest, where Ayakashi (demon spirits) are preparing a party. They come to find out that they are planning an assault on the humans for capturing their lord. It's up to Takashi and some new friends to put a stop to their plans.
Zoku Natsume Yuujinchou is a thirteen episode series having just come out with episode one in January 2009. The previous thirteen episodes aren't that old and should be used as a reference point for this series. You can actually find episodes on Crunchyroll, so no need to illegally download episodes. It's too early to tell if this has the potential to be a great series, but I'm eager to watch the first thirteen episodes before continuing this enjoyable show.
