Kemono no Souja Erin (The Beast Player Erin) Synopsis (1 episodes):Kemono no Souja Erin is about a girl named Erin who lives with her mother in a town called Aka. Her mother watches over monsters known as Toudas as both their tamer and doctor. In the opening sequence of this series, we see the destructive force of the Toudas as they dismantle an entire army. The time period seems to be in the thirteenth or fourteenth century. There is a cartoon quality to both the animation and character design. It's reminiscent of classic 1985 series, David the Gnome. There is a serious problem with pacing as the story seems to crawl in its pursuit to a main storyline.

The first episode starts with the town's monster doctor, Soyon, looking for her daughter Erin. They're known as Kiri and are treated as outsiders in this village. The story revolves around the introduction of a new baby Touda and it getting lost. As a special stipulation for staying in the village, Erin's mother has to keep tabs on all the Touda. If one gets away, she will receive an unnamed punishment. Fearing for her mother, Erin and two of her friends venture into dangerous territory to find the baby Touda.

There seems to be a bigger story brewing with the Toudas and the opening fighting sequence of the show. The town of Aka is ruled by the grand duke who is protecting the real king. This is partially explained through an opening narration. Ten minutes into the episode, the show focuses on Erin and her mother.

To its credit, the last five minutes presented some action and drama, but was it enough to make up for the twenty minutes of grasshopper chasing and water boiling?

First Impression: Strong potential to get better considering Nahoko Uehashi slow paced style. Give it three episodes before you throw in the towel.
