The voice acting is good here and not annoying at all. There was no moment where I was forced to watch Death Note using the original Japanese audio track with English subtitles on. Brad Swaile provides a great interpretation for Light Yagami that works well with Near, voiced by Cathy Weseluck.
The animation quality is also good without all the quick edits and repetition of a single action in some older anime.
Death Note tells an intriging story that builds up through each episode, right up to Episode 37, “New World.” In episode 33, “Scorn,” there is an amusing verbal exchange between Misa Amane and Kiyomi Takada that show how deeply in love they both are with Light Yagami. Misa is a bubbly idol singer who isn’t the brightest contrasted with the intelligent, quiet and deadly Kiyomi. The final battle on the disc is what any viewer is expecting and the interesting plot twists are perfectly timed to cause the viewer to take a step back and analyzes how this will end.
The DVD comes with a few extras like the standard audio commentary for Episode 33 and a Behind the Scenes segment with the voice actors. Topping things out is What’s Up, People an interesting Japanese death metal track performed by Maximum the Hormone to open up each .
Overall, Death Note has been a successful hit in a wide variety of media from movies, manga, video games, novels, and this anime series. Death Note is sure to please both hardcore and causal anime fans alike and is highly recommended.
