MahoromaticStory by: Bunjuuroo NakayamaArt by: Bow DitamaPublisher (Japan): Wani BooksPublisher (US): TokyopopMahoromatic is a unique series with a simple premise: android protects human master while waiting for termination. However cliché the premise seems, the underlying theme of loss and anger makes this series very intriguing. When you first see the cover of Mahoromatic, you have an expectation that it is a stereotypical harem series with the same plot devices used over and over again. Once you see the opening pages, your expectations will change dramatically.Set in the 1980's, Mahoromatic follows a war between a secret defense force known as Vesper and an alien threat called the Saints. Each side uses advanced androids to fight this war. Meanwhile the real world is unaware of the oncoming threat of an alien invasion. Mahoro is a nine-year-old soldier android who has been defending the human race for her entire existence. She has a shortened life span and will cease functioning in 39 days if left in active duty. Her superiors have decided to deactivate most of her defensive systems, raising her life span to 398 days. After being given the option of doing whatever she wants, Mahoro has decided to become the guardian of the intelligent and creative Suguru Misato, a well-liked fourteen-year-old student at a Tokyo high school. He lives alone in a large two-story house and is currently looking for a maid. As expected, Mahoro moves in and all hell breaks loose. As Mahoro tries to spend her retirement taking care of Suguru, she has to deal with the perils of ecchi magazines, dirty houses, ghosts, and the efforts of Saint members trying to kill her.
Mahoromatic takes erotic humor to a new level with loads of panty shots, boob jokes, and a twenty-five-year-old teachers desiring carnal relations with Suguru. By having a protagonist who is completely anti-hentai amongst the varying levels of nudity and ecchi behavior, the series is much more diverse from its competition. The inclusion of Mahoro's impending loss of life gives this story a sense of finality which other series lack. It allows the audience to know that there is an end, and while it may be sad, the road will be entertaining and engaging. Overall, it is a harem series that has a unique plot twist. Given the chance, Mahoromatic will endear itself into your heart.
