Spring 2005 in Review by Joe Di Benedetto (Spike Spiegel) |

| One of CLAMP’s finest mangas made the jump from the pages to the small screen in the spring. Tsubasa Chronicle is a romantic fantasy adventure set in the Land of Clow. When a teenaged Syaoran returns from an archeological dig, his childhood friend Princess Sakura greets him and wishes to confess her feelings for him. But Sakura gets interrupted, and loses the opportunity. Later on, Sakura meets up with Syaoran again by the ruins, but a mysterious person from another dimension attempts to kidnap her. Syaoran prevents the kidnapping, but the incident causes Sakura to lose her feathers representing her memories and life force. So now Sakura is left unconscious, and she will die unless Syaoran can seek help from the time-space witch Yuuko. The priest-mage Yukito then sends Syaoran and Sakura across space and time to see Yuuko on Earth in Japan. Once they arrive in Yuuko’s presence, Syaoran learns that he is not the only person seeking Yuuko’s aid. A powerful ninja named Kurogane was sent there by Princess Tomoyo from her universe to learn the true meaning of strength. Also, they meet a powerful mage named Fai who is on the run from sleeping ruler named Ashura. Yuuko promises to grant them all their wishes, but they must all give up what they cherish the most. They then all set off on a quest through multiple dimensions with the critter Mokona to help find Sakura’s feathers and fulfill each of their individual wishes. Some of you probably read this synopsis and say to yourself, "Wait a minute!! Aren't all of those characters from other CLAMP series?!" Well, they are, and they aren't. Having the "same" characters as Cardcaptor Sakura was the main reason that I gave Tsubasa Chronicle a shot. I kind of look at it as an alternate universe story involving the already established CLAMP characters. The character names are all used and they look similar or exactly the same, but their personalities are slightly different and this is a whole new world. The story crosses over with CLAMP's xxxHolic manga. Some of the characters featured from various other CLAMP manga are Sakura, Syaoran, Tomoyo, Touya and Yukito from CCS, Chii from Chobits and Mokona from MKR. However this isn't a sequel to those manga, but an original story. It also has different voice actors for all characters (ie: voice actress for Sakura differs from CCS, etc). The series is only 10 episodes in, and I have enjoyed it a lot thus far. I highly recommend this show to any fan of CLAMP or any fan of fantasy adventures. |
