Spring 2005 in Review Part II
by Joe Di Benedetto (Spike Spiegel)
Law of Ueki has probably the dumbest concept of any anime that I have ever seen. I apologize for being so critical of it, but the story is just stupid in my opinion. Law of Ueki is the story of junior high school student Kosuke Ueki. What makes Ueki so special? He has the ability to turn anything that he believes to be garbage into a tree. Yes, that’s right, he turns garbage into trees (move over Captain Planet). This special power was actually given to him by his homeroom teacher Kobayashi (not the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest champion). Ueki manages to keep his new ability a secret from the rest of the students at school, until one day a classmate, Ai Mori, discovers his secret. She begins to help Ueki after discovering the sacrifices he must make to use his ability. The reason that Kobayashi has granted Ueki this power is to compete in a competition to become the next “god.” This competition consists of 100 participants. These participants must choose a champion from their students and give him/her a special ability (just like Kobayashi did to Ueki). So Ueki is Kobayashi’s champion, and he must compete against all the other champions in this tournament. Whoever wins the tournament will receive a "blank ability" that can become any ability at all, and his/her teacher will become the next “god.” The animation is pretty subpar in this series. I mean, it is not terrible, but it is definitely nothing to write home about. Studio DEEN handles the animation, and I expected more from the studio that brought us “Read or Die.” The characters are pretty good with enjoyable personalities, but it’s too bad their special abilities are terrible and lame. This show has recently been licensed in the United States by Geneon Entertainment. I can almost guarantee that a show as quirky and ridiculous as this will appear on Cartoon Network’s Toonami or Miguzi or even the Fox Box. If this show sounds enjoyable to you, give it a chance. I personally just do not like this show at all.
