Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles Review by: Joshua Valencia Developer: Konami Publisher: Konami Platform: PlayStation Portable Release Date: October 23, 2007 What is widely considered one of the best Castlevania games in the series, Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is essentially a “new-school” remake of the original Rondo of Blood game that was originally released on the Japanese PC Engine console, otherwise known as the TurboGrafx-16 in the U.S. Castlevania: DXC follows the story of Richter Belmont, the heir of a long line of vampire killers with the sworn duty to defeat Dracula. The Dark Priest Shaft resurrects the vampire and, after building up an army, both Shaft and Dracula destroy Richter’s village. Additionally, Dracula kidnaps his girlfriend, Annette, and vampire huntress, Maria Renard. Taking the fabled Vampire Killer whip in hand, Richter sets out to Dracula’s castle to defeat him and get back Maria and Annette.

Gameplay is kept on an old-school level with classic action platforming. Though the game boasts nice 3D visuals, the action is strictly on a 2D plane. Various goons like zombies, skeletons, and gargoyles fill up the levels and the player’s whip makes quick work of these enemies. For harder enemies, there are various sub-weapons that can be used, such as knives, axes and holy water. In traditional Castlevania fashion, the player is only allowed to carry one sub-weapon at a time, creating some strategy in the player’s small inventory. Keeping with the gaming spirit, the difficulty definitely ramps up and there are cheap deaths just waiting at every turn.

While the gameplay has a large cheap factor, the game doesn’t disappoint in the sound department; it is outstanding. Boasting many voiceovers, the game certainly gives a nice kick in the acting department. The music is no slouch either; the best tunes in Castlevania history have been remixed for this release. Though some gamers might think that the original tunes will always be the best, hearing these remixes certainly brings about nostalgia. Whether it may be the remix to the upbeat Vampire Killer or the original epic orchestral sounds of the song “Red Dawn”, there is something here for everybody.

Fans will get an even better kick in the pants with the awesome unlockable content in the game. The original Rondo of Blood, never before released in North America, can be unlocked in game. Additionally, the critically acclaimed PS1 classic, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, can also be unlocked. That’s three full games for the price of one. You can be sure that this is one great package.

All in All: Though the old school difficulty may turn newcomers away, the gameplay, music and awesome unlockable content will keep gamers putting this UMD into their PSP again and again. Be sure to pick it up.

Bottom Line: 9/10
