Sean’s Thoughts
Gainax is generally known for their mecha series such Gurren Lagann, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Gunbuster. When trailers of Hanamaru Kindergarten surfaced, question marks punctuated the puzzled faces of the anime fans. Yet, out of all the series debuting this winter season, Hanamaru Kindergarten seemed the most intriguing for me. After viewing the first episode on Crunchyroll, the verdict is favorable.
There is a softness to the series that compliments some comical moments and misunderstandings. The episode starts with Tsuchida, a male first-year teacher, coming to the aid of an abandoned little girl. They play on the obvious by having the child, Anzu, think Tsuchida is trying to hit on her. What’s surprising is how innocently they play it off, with Anzu running through several relationship scenarios in her mind.
This first episode subtly establishes the quirky characteristics of the kindergarten students, teachers and parents. The best example is blue-haired Hiragi’s wearing of a cat outfit as she tells her dad about her day. While the character-types aren’t incredibly original, the chemistry is impressive. The small interactions during their entrance ceremony remind me of my own childhood.
The comedic elements are perfectly choreographed and reminiscent of American shows like The Office and Curb Your Enthusiasm. The humor is explosive with one scene forcing a belly laugh, albeit spiked with a cringe of uneasiness. This is described best when Tsuchida is outed to the parents as being a child molester. An innocent misunderstanding that gets funnier with his absurd rebuttal.

If the series solely relied on age inappropriate humor, it would fall short of being interesting. Instead, they introduce elements of serious storytelling with the developing past relationship between Tsuchida and one of the parents.
It’s reassuring to find a good show this season. Hanamaru Kindergarten’s potential lies in its ability to charm its viewers with cuteness, comedy and depth.
