Review by: John-Paul Natysin Director: Takahiro Omori Animation Production: Brains Base Based on the novels by Ryohgo Narita   Synopsis Ikebukuro is a weird place where weird things happen.   John-Paul's Thoughts In July 2007, Brains Base released an anime called Baccano!, and it was good. It was based on a series of novels by Ryohgo Narita and directed by Takahiro Omori. With its Pulp Fiction-esque storytelling style and exploitative violence, Baccano! was, hands down, one of the best shows to come out that year. Three years later, the crew that brought us Baccano! is back again adapting another of Narita's novels.

It's hard to say what Durarara!! is about. Mostly because I've watched two episodes and I'm still not sure. It's sort of like Boogiepop Phantom in a sense: There's a bunch of characters that are tangentially connected, strange occurrences are happened around town, and there's a weird phantom character doing stuff in the background. Expect this time the phantom is freaking Ghost Rider, and people in the face with their motorcycle!

Summary

I have really high expectations for this show, but I'm not convinced that they've been met. Baccano! had kind of a slow start so I'm not giving up hope just yet. Don't misunderstand me; Durarara!! is still a good show--just not as good as Baccano! (yet). Based on its pedigree, I can tell this is a show to keep an eye on. I just pray that I won't be disappointed.
