Series Summary

Growing up, Tohru Honda always relied on the love and support of her mother. In consideration to her schoolwork, Tohru was too busy to say good-bye, in accordance with her daily ritual. She didn’t know that she wouldn’t get a second chance. Dealing with this unimaginable loss, Tohru bottled her emotions. Her problems began to multiple after her living arrangements with her grandfather fell through. Tohru is the kind of girl that would rather put others problems before her own. So not to inconvenience any of her friends, Tohru pitched a tent and lived in the woods. With a picture of her mother to keep her company, Tohru managed to convince the ones closest to her that things were normal.

Due to her torrid living conditions, Tohru fell ill. A boy from her school managed to find Tohru when she was at her lowest point. After she was brought to his house, it was discovered that she was living on their family’s property. To make matters worse, a landslide buried her tent. Tohru was embarrassed to be in the presence of the most popular kid in school. Her clothes were in rags and she didn’t like to impose. They managed to come to an arrangement. Tohru agreed to clean and take care of the cooking in exchange for a room. She knew that if her friend knew, they wouldn’t approve. Not only that, they would know she wasn’t living with her grandfather. Another complication surfaced when Tohru learned of the curse that plagued her newly found landlords.

Fruits Basket is one of the most popular Manga titles for young girls in Japan . However, it’s a story that transcends the boundaries of gender lines. It’s about a selfless girl that rebounds from a cruel and unfair life. When she learns the secret of the Soma family curse, Tohru Honda is given a second lease on life. This title has comedy, action, drama and a compelling mystery. This allows this series to stand out for its characters. Each episode pops with colorful life as a new member of the Soma family is introduced. A common criticism of this show is the overabundance of characters. Some play an integral part of the story while others are never heard from after their debut.

This series excels where most others fail. While on the surface it might seem geared to one gender, it really has something for every Anime fan. Take my word when I say this is one of the best produced Anime titles of all time.
