Eureka Seven was the second of the two series that I was looking forward to in the spring season. The series is helmed by Bones, the same studio that has brought us Wolf’s Rain and Cowboy Bebop. So once I discovered that Bones has a new series, I knew that I had to see it. Eureka Seven is the story of 14-year old Renton and his desire to be just like his hero, Holland. Renton lives with his grandfather and aids him in his job as a mechanic, but Renton’s heart is not in being a mechanic. He wants to travel the world just like Holland and Gekko State. Gekko State is the famed organization that Holland and his cohorts run. The organization is a resistance group against the established military rule. They use prototype LFOs (mech-like machines) to combat the military regime. The members of Gekko State are also idolized for their Riff* ability (Riff is a sport similar to surfing except they ride air waves), and are icons to Riff fans. The story really begins when one of these LFOs crashes in front of Renton, and a beautiful young girl named Eureka exits. Eureka asks Renton for parts to fix the LFO, and the story goes on from there. I knew this show had potential only after seeing the first episode. Now that I have seen the first 6 episodes, I am hooked to the series. The animation is very impressive, especially when the LFOs are in action. The interaction between the characters is amazing and really sucks you into the show. Even if you are not a fan of mecha anime, this series is worth giving a try. Even though it has mechs, the real bread and butter is the characters. You’ll come for the animation and art of the LFOs, but you’ll stay for the characters. Eureka Seven was actually licensed by Bandai well before the first episode even aired. So expect this series to be coming to DVD in America sometime next year.
