Futakoi Alternative is another alternate universe anime. If you recall, "Tsubasa Chronicle" is also set in a sort of alternate universe with already established characters. Futakoi Alternative has the same characters from the anime series “Futakoi,” but it is a completely different story and only really shares parts of the setting and the character names with the previous series. Futakoi Alternative is a detective anime series, but it cannot be described as simply as that. Futaba Rentarou, the main protagonist, runs the Futaba Detective Agency. Rentarou is in his twenties in this series, unlike in the original series. He took over the agency after his father’s death three weeks earlier. Rentarou does not handle the agency by himself. He has help in the form of Shirogane Sara and Shirogane Souju, his identical twin assistants. The twins are actually the same age as in the original series, which is kind of odd but it works. All three main characters live in the same house, and the episodes revolve around the principle of “us three will always be together.” The first episode hits you like a runaway frieght train filled with explosives. It is filled with nonstop action, and gun-toting twins (Sara and Souju). Not all of the episodes are like this though. Each episode has a completely different pace and tone. The next few episodes were kind of on the bizarre side, but they were still enjoyable and explained and developed the relationship between Rentarou and the twins. The characters in this show are extremely lovable, and are such a treat to follow week in and week out. The animation is top notch. UFO Table really does an excellent job with all of the action scenes. The explosions are huge and intense, and the animation flows at a high speed. I absolutely love this show. I mean, what’s not to love about a show with gun-wielding teen twins that kick major ass. But, please be warned that not every episode is filled with heart-pumping action. If you are a fan of the original series, this should bring a jolt of energy and a completely different take on the characters you have learned to love. You will still love the characters and enjoy this series. Give this series a trial run, and try to watch at least the first 7 episodes.
